The NIRMANA SOCIETY was established in 1988 to provide logistic support to the National Campaign Committee – Construction Labour (NCC-CL)’s campaign for a comprehensive central legislation to provide social security and labour welfare to construction workers.
In the initial years, NIRMANA supported campaign activities, awareness generation amongst construction workers and welfare activities like child care, education, civic amenities, health-care services, free legal aid etc. across the slums of North-West Delhi in partnership with other NGOs and through local donations. We also supported organizing, six Housing and Multi-Purpose Co-operative Societies under the “Punarvas Scheme” (Re-housing scheme).
Our active community-based advocacy led to the enactment of two central acts for Construction Workers in 1996. In 1998, NIRMANA, shifted attention to other segments of the Unorganised Sector like domestic workers communities. NIRMANA promoted NIRMALA NIKETAN, a Domestic Workers collective comprising mainly of women or young girls who migrate often illegally or forcibly as cheap labour from impoverished regions of India to Delhi and other urban centres.
Since then, NIRMANA has worked directly with tribal and marginalised communities, where these domestic workers originate from, to provide dignified livelihoods and often rehabilitate those girls who wish to give up domestic work for alternative occupations. We empower these girls with the requisite training and skills at source and in the destination areas, to provide for a safe and healthy route to job migration.
